BSRO

I turn in the direction of the sun and keep walking.

29 October 2025 7:30am Skunk Canyon “When will we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain!” says the Bard; but none of those things happened this frosty morning, and we could instead attempt the response, “When morning sunrise frost does reign!”

And so it was that D, S, and C met at Hillsdale Drive for what is perhaps the first Big Sunrise Out (BSRO) in the History of Humpday; huzzah.

A brisk morning, 28°F, first frost of the season. Our adventurers, fearless but cautious, over-prepared their layers, and not long after commencing their morning meander, did verily shed these outer layers, the better to ascend these chilly hills.

Deer ran away. Birds chattered. Hikers and joggers and dog-walkers said good morning. Our intrepid explorers strode on, undeterred, as the NCAR cafeteria awaited them at the “summit,” with coffee and confections.

The morning chill faded, for the most part, while a bit of frost clung to the grass in the shadows of the north-facing slopes. Our intrepid explorers, clad in at least three layers more than they needed, found themselves over-heating as the sun climbed higher.

Soon enough, these stalwart travelers arrived in time for…

P2. NCAR Mesa Cafe: breakfast burritos, muffins, coffee, yogurt.

P1, redux. Descending the hill back to Hillsdale. Fare thee well and adieu.

Another successful B*O.

Questions of the Hike

  1. What mammals lived on Pangaea and did they end up inhabiting the various resulting continents?
