Phase 1: Pella Crossing

After a day and a half of cold temperatures and a rare September snow, S and D ventured out to Hygiene, to explore the winding paths and ponds of Pella Crossing. En route to the trail: fields of flattened corn (and fields of standing corn); red-tailed hawks sitting around on the ground; George Harrison singing “Here Comes the Sun” on the radio, just as the sun came out from the clouds.

Paradoxically, the temperature warmed as the sun set.

On the trail, plenty of birds: goldfinches in sunflowers; a preening heron; some honking geese.

There was a guy with three fishing poles and a cigarette. He appeared at various locations around the path, like Puck following Snug and Bottom over park and pale[1].

Twice our fearless adventurers wandered down a perfectly good path, only to find a locked gate to private property.

Phase 2, 3: Pella Parking Lot

Sandwiches, and apple pie. A yodeling coyote.

Questions of the Night

  1. How does a field of corn get flattened?

  2. Is that a crane, heron, egret, or what?

Notes

1. Park and pale: a paraphrase of Midsummer Night’s Dream:

Over hill, over dale
Thorough bush, thorough brier
Over park, over pale
Thorough flood, thorough fire
I do wander everywhere
