Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York
— William Shakespeare, Richard III (1.1)

Drove up to Brainard today, to escape the 95 deg heat at home. A mile higher than home, the temperature is a blissful 20 degrees cooler.

The winter gate opens tomorrow, at which point you’ll need reservations to enter the park (see recreation.gov). Hopefully, the reservation system will improve the overcrowding situation here.

Two mile walk up the road to the lake. Clear skies, hardly a breath of wind. Snow in the forest, sizable ponds of meltwater along the edges of the road. At one point I saw a duck swimming in one of these puddles.

While eating lunch at the lake, l got photo-bombed by a ground squirrel. Never even saw it.
