Into the Scar

Into the Scar

D, D2, and S strode up the Greenbelt Plateau trail, straight into a burned forest from December’s Marshall Fire, 4.78 miles round trip, including a side-trip along the Community Ditch Trail to Marshall Lake. 40-ish degrees F, not much wind to speak of.

The parking lot was empty, and we saw no other hikers along the route. Perhaps one or two cyclists on the Community Ditch trail. Many burned trees, with tops still green and yellowed lower needles. Burned yucca, some green shoots emerging. Meadows turning green. The ditch was running, carrying water from Eldorado Springs to Marshall Lake.

Definite scent of ash in the air, at times like licking a barbeque.

Question of the Night

  • What’s up with Marshall Lake?
