In Thunder, Lightning, or in Rain

In Thunder, Lightning, or in Rain
If it keeps on raining, the levee’s going to break.
— Memphis Minnie

As usual, afternoon thunderstorms billowed up over the mountains, leaving the eastern half of the metro area relatively untouched. Given this pattern, one might assume that our fearless adventurers would venture out to the dry eastern trails, but no: “fearless” is no mere affectation! Instead, S and D found the deepest, darkest cloud on the doppler radar map, and headed straight for it.

The trailhead parking lot was mostly empty; not everyone is a fearless adventurer, after all. S and D each donned a pair of jackets and an umbrella, as the wind blustered and battered the trees. Up the muddy path marched our intrepid explorers, straight into the maelstrom.

Well wouldn’t you know, they emerged from the trees into a calm, cool, and pleasant evening, with almost no one else on the trail. Instead, a herd of bluebirds flew around catching bugs, poppies bloomed in the field, and clouds towered to the east. Along the way stone benches waited patiently, offering their inscriptions, and their rest.

So that was all. Nary a drop of rain, a breath of wind to fling the mosquitoes away, some green grass, and some poppies.

All in all, another successful BNO.

For now I smell the rain
And with it pain
And it's headed my way

Ominous.
