Bold and Forth On

BNOSRHigh Plains
Bold and Forth On
But flies an eagle flight, bold and forth on,
Leaving no tract behind.
— William Shakespeare, Timon of Athens 1.1

C and S opted this evening for a slightly unusual out and back along the High Plains trail from the Greenbelt Plateau trailhead. A few cyclists passed hither and yon, and among the usual meadowlarks, red-winged blackbirds, and swallows, were a pair of eagles in flight, another pair on the ground, a herd of elk, and some prairie dogs.

A good time was had by all.

Our fearless adventurers stopped by a couple of cattle cisterns, which seemed recently visited (judging by the muddy ground surrounding them.

A passing jogger pointed out a couple of large birds on a hilltop, which seemed to be eagles. Viewing the photos later on the computer, it seems these have brown heads, indicating they are likely juvenile eagles (if not another species). Later, two adult eagles passed overhead, soaring toward sunset.

Also spotted, a herd of elk in the distance. Again the photo later revealed some details we had not seen in the field, including a prairie dog standing and watching the herd, and a hiker at the distant Coalton Trail corner also observing the scene.
